The Cassiopeia A (Cas A) supernova remnant, located about 11,000 light-years from Earth, has been revealed in a new image using data from Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). The image shows curtains of material appearing orange and red due to warm dust emission. Mottled filaments of bright pink represent material from the star itself, and a green loop extends across the central cavity. The complexity of the structure is challenging for scientists to understand. MIRI was contributed by NASA and ESA, designed and built by a consortium of European Institutes and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in partnership with the University of Arizona.
